Maine is a gorgeous state from the rugged coast to the bald mountain tops.

Day trips offer a change of pace providing you with an opportunity to engage in the beauty of our pine tree state. You will come back to camp with renewed energy and excited to share with others the adventures you have had through trip stories and songs. You’ll climb mountains, take outings to the coastal beaches and canoe or sail on our beautiful Great Pond – 8000 acres of fresh water lake.
Overnight and wilderness trips have been a long standing tradition at Camp Runoia. Going out into the wilderness in small, guided groups allows growth and development for campers that is simple and magical. Camp Runoia is committed to the philosophy of low impact camping and helping campers to foster an appreciation for the astounding beauty of the wilderness and becoming stewards of our precious earth. Trip choices are based on age and experience range from one to six nights. Hiking and canoeing are available in each age group.

Junior Maine Guide: For over sixty years, the State of Maine has sponsored a three tiered skill-building camper program. Beginning with Junior Maine Woodsman and Maine Woodsman and culminating in the challenging and intense Junior Maine Guide program. The Belgrade Lakes Region is Central Maine’s premier lake area for recreation. We are located an hour from the coast and an hour from various mountain ranges. Our camp is nestled on nearly a mile of shore line on the south side of Great Pond. Great Pond is the largest of the Belgrade Lakes – a watershed containing 14 lakes and over 5000 acres of conservation land. The Belgrade Regional Conservation Alliance and the Belgrade Lakes Association are instrumental in making conservation land and hiking trails available, as well as monitoring the water quality of our lakes.
Maine is home to three small prestigious liberal arts colleges - Bates, Bowdoin, Colby- as well as the renowned University of Maine, the focused College of the Atlantic and a variety of other great schools. Many of our campers apply to Maine schools after being drawn to the area as campers at Camp Runoia.

E.B. White wrote about our lakes, “Peace and goodness and jollity.” His references in Letters of E.B. White to the Belgrade Lakes are numerous and indulgent. The Broadway production of On Golden Pond was penned on the shores of Great Pond by Ernest Thompson. L.L. Bean built a summer home on Great Pond and spent many a summer’s morning fishing on our lake. The characters of Belgrade -although not all famous - are indeed colorful, helpful and care deeply about keeping the magic in the region.

The great state of Maine, and specifically the Belgrade Lake Region, is full of vacation opportunities for you and your family. Our parent/family handbook lists great local inns and B&Bs and we would be happy to refer you to other fun things to do in Maine.

Who are members of the Runoia camper community?
Our campers are kind, engaged, adventurous, inclusive and full of life. They come from all over the country and several countries outside of the USA. Each camper brings her own unique talents and personality that adds to the richness of cabin life and our community as a whole.

Why should our family choose Camp Runoia?
Camp Runoia is dedicated to all of its campers, providing a summer experience that is packed with challenge, learning and fun. Activities are important, trips are important, campfires are important, singing is important but above all, at Runoia, CAMPERS ARE PARAMOUNT!

How does my daughter sign up for activities?
Each week she selects four possible activities she would like to have as a major. One of her four choices is assigned to her for the week. She gets to go to her major class five times during the week culminating in an extra long end-of-week class. Skill progression throughout the week - and more elaborate projects - are possible with the major system at Runoia. The following week, she can change her four choices and will be assigned a different major. Over a few summers, campers are able to major in every activity at Camp Runoia.

Daily choices are made for two electives each day. Cabin groups are rotated through sign up and each cabin gets a chance to have a day where they get first pick at all the activities.

Where will my daughter live at camp?
Campers at Runoia live in cabins outfitted with limited electricity and most have an attached bathroom with toilets and sinks. Shower Houses are sprinkled throughout camp and offer additional toilet facilities. Cabins are cozy buildings that soon feel like home as campers forge deep connections with their fellow campers and counselors. Cabins have ten to fourteen campers and three to four counselors. Cabin assignments are carefully planned and organized by the directors. Our cabins are an amazing place to spend a summer!

Can I communicate with my daughter while she is at Runoia?
Yes! Discover a lost art this summer – writing letters and cards! Camp is a wonderful opportunity to begin written correspondence with your daughter. Our campers love to receive mail at camp. You are welcome to send one care package to your daughter while she is at camp. Bunk Notes are a fun way to email your camper – they are available through our partnership with BunkOne.com and you will be provided a password to access the Runoia site on BunkOne.com

What does ACA accredited mean?
Since 1960 Camp Runoia has been continuously accredited by the American Camp Association, complying with over 300 safety standards. ACA is Camp Runoia’s link to a global camping community and an opportunity to network professionally with peers and educators worldwide.

What are meals like?
Meal time at Runoia is time to connect, time to share and of course time to eat. Campers and counselors sit together in multi-age assigned tables. Tables rotate weekly ensuring campers are able to spend time with many members of the camp community. Table groups soon become fast friends as they share well balanced meals. Camp Runoia is committed to providing meals that are healthy and provide a variety of choice. To enhance meal time, some picnic-style meals are offered outside of our dining hall. Early summer evenings are especially pretty on Great Pond and our campers really appreciate the chance to have even more time outside before evening activities.

PLEASE NOTE: If your daughter happens to have any specific allergy needs, our cooks do a great job of providing alternate allergy-free foods. Please let the camp office know as soon as possible about your daughter’s specific needs and we will do our very best to accommodate her allergies.

Do you allow campers to have electronics at camp?
Camp Runoia strikes a healthy balance between being completely unplugged and being too plugged in. We have a couple of CD players for special occasions; campers can bring a few CDs to be played on camp machines. During cabin clean up, music might be played for fun. We ask that campers refrain from bringing their own personal stereos, MP3 players, electronic games and any music that is inappropriate for children. Our older girls (age 13 and up) can have MP3 music in their cabin to listen to personally during quiet times. All video must be removed from the MP3 players before bringing them to camp.

Pam works closely with co-directors, Alex Jackson and Lani Toscano to foster successful experiences for your child at Runoia. Guiding campers and counselors alike toward meaningful camp moments is a main part of Pam’s role at camp. Sharing the enjoyment of outdoor activities is also important to her.

Pam’s interest in outdoor education and environmental studies, lead her to complete a BA degree in Human Ecology from College of the Atlantic.

After working at camp and completing her MBA at Northeastern University in Boston in 1994, Pam purchased the family business. 2010 marks the 20th year Pam has directed Camp Runoia.

As past president of American Camp Association/New England and the Maine Youth Camping Association, Pam’s professional ties to the camp industry run deep and strong. A fourth generation camp director in the state of Maine, Pam continues the Cobb family tradition of owning and operating youth camps in Maine.

Pam’s husband Mark Heuberger, an environmental consultant, is also hands on at camp throughout the summer and year round. You will often find Pam and Mark singing camp songs, meeting with campers and staff and families, teaching waterskiing and sailing, and strategically planning for Camp Runoia.

When not immersed in the camp season, Pam and Mark can be found snow shoeing or hiking with their dogs, sailing on the lake or the ocean, doing something outside or avidly following New England sports teams.

Camp has been an integral part of Lani’s life and career – her passion for camp was forged as a camper and young counselor. All told, Lani has spent over thirty years in camping as a camper, counselor, CIT director, waterfront director, and camp director. With a Masters degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and an undergraduate degree from Mount Holyoke College, Lani has worked at prep schools, run the Bates College crew program, and instructed for Outward Bound.
Lani also serves in an elected position on the American Camp Association/New England Board of Directors and the Maine Youth Camping Foundation Board among numerous other volunteer positions. Lani’s dedication to camping is centered on her belief that camp is a critical component of a child’s education, providing life skills that are never forgotten and frequently drawn upon.

During the summer season, Lani’s role in directing Runoia focuses on helping counselors successfully fulfill their jobs and connecting with campers and their camp experience, allowing Lani to communicate with parents about their children. From planning staff training to working with families to counseling staff, Lani is a key part of our director team. In addition to her many skills, her experience in marketing and communications is an asset to Camp Runoia.

When not at camp, Lani and her family can be found creating their own adventures throughout Maine, Canada and beyond. You might find them in the mountains, in a canoe, on the ski slopes, at the beach, or maybe even in their own backyard simply playing catch! Lani, her husband Wolfe Tone, and twins Maizley and Whittier Tone live in the Portland Maine area.

A member of the Runoia staff since 1995, Alex Jackson originally hails from northern England. She first encountered American summer camps while studying for her BSC in Physical Education and Sports Science. After completing her teaching certification, Alex worked with youth - both in the classroom and outdoors with an emphasis on experiential education. Her 15 years in summer camp has led her to a year-round job with Runoia.
Mainly focused on program development and staff hiring during the “off season”, Alex is the hub of camp programming in the summer months. She carefully guides campers to choose variety in their schedules and masterminds the program for both campers and staff for the in-camp program as well as out of camp trips.

Overseeing safety on the waterfront and adventure challenge activities are areas she focuses on during the summer. She is still hands-on with teaching and is often on the lake with the girls working on swimming skills. As an American Camp Association Standards Visitor, Alex takes a keen interest in the safety of all our program areas in and out of camp.

Now a Maine resident, she enjoys many seasonal outdoor activities with her active family, including her three children, and works year-round for Camp Runoia from her Raymond, Maine home.

<% End Function Function DirectorsStaff() %>

Runoia directors take great pride in the Camp Runoia staff. Each summer, both returning counselors and new counselors come together from across the US and around the world to build an energetic team ready to guide our campers through their summer. When hiring, Runoia directors are dedicated to finding counselors who are child-focused, enthusiastic, committed and caring. It is essential that all counselors are committed to providing Runoia campers with a high quality experience in every aspect of the program.
Runoia directors personally interview and screen all of our counselors and staff. There are three tiers to the interview process including two in-depth interviews. Careful staff selection and training ensure a caring, supportive and encouraging environment in which campers grow, learn and have fun.

Staff Training is the most essential component of our summer preparations. Prior to our campers’ arrival, all staff members go through an intensive orientation designed to familiarize them with camp, issues of child growth and development, and their job responsibilities. By the end of the training, our entire staff is quite excited to welcome our campers.

Activities at Runoia are taught by quality instructors highly skilled in their specific activity. Most importantly, activity instructors are confident in their teaching ability, creating lesson plans for both beginners and advanced levels. In addition to our full time nurse, many Runoia counselors are CPR and First Aid trained.

<% End Function Function Leadership() %>

The leadership training programs at Runoia mark an exciting departure from the camper program. By participating in the program, girls are able to become role models to campers and peers while developing their own leadership styles and skills.

Camp Runoia welcomes into the two tier leadership program young women that have grown up in our community and other young women with camp experience who are looking for a new challenge.

Counselors in Training
Girls who have finished 10th grade and are at least 16 years old are eligible for this program. CIT’s live as a group and begin to work towards teaching and supervising younger girls while developing their own practical and interpersonal skills. They are supervised by their CIT Director and have a fully comprehensive program designed for and by the group. While involved in the program they have the opportunity to participate in certification programs and enhance skills that will benefit their college applications.

Junior Counselor
Girls who have completed 11th grade and are at least 17 years old are eligible for this program. Girls choosing the JC option are ready to step into a counselor like position at camp where they live in camper cabins and assist staff in activity areas.

While similar to a staff position, JC’s continue to receive additional support from a designated senior staff member and continue to participate in a supported program designed to meet their individual needs.

The skills that are gained by participating in these programs will apply to school leadership positions, future employment environments, team sports, youth group dynamics and social skills. Because participants are encouraged to work hard, play fair, try new things and push themselves, they will discover a new sense of self and purpose.

Please contact the office for more program specifics and an application packet.
